Annual Eye Health Exams

At Central Oregon Eyecare, we provide comprehensive, primary eye care for the entire family well as specialty care of eye diseases and disorders.

Preventative and routine eye exams are important to maintaining good eye health. Often, eye and vision problems do not have obvious symptoms or signs, but are easily diagnosed by our certified optometric physicians. By diagnosing eye and vision conditions early, our optometric physicians are able to provide treatment options and in most cases restore or prevent vision loss. The American Optometric Association and the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommend annual eye and vision exams. Central Oregon Eyecare employs a customizable, automated recall system to ensure we keep you current with your eye care. This will give you peace of mind that you are taking care of your most precious sense, you sight.

Eye Exam and Consultation
Our optometric physicians understand that many conditions in other parts of your body can, and often do, affect your eyes and vision. During your eye exam, our doctors will ask you questions about any symptoms or issues you are experiencing, medications you are currently taking, visual blur, your work environment, and your overall health. Family history and previous eye or vision conditions will also be discussed during this part of the examination. All of this information is considered when your doctor makes his or her recommendation for treatment.

Vision Testing and Solutions
Regular vision testing and evaluations ensure that you always have the clearest vision possible. Our Optometric Physicians and their technicians will test your vision at a variety of your common working distances as part of your comprehensive eye exam. Based on the results of your vision test, and how you use your eyes, a variety of eyeglasses, contact lenses and/or eye exercises may be prescribed to maximize your vision.

Specialty eyeglass options may include fully customizable progressive addition lenses, computer or office lenses, lenses for night driving, music glasses, polarized sunglasses, anti-fatigue lenses to reduce eyestrain with extensive reading (great for students), and lenses that protect your retinas from the harmful light that may cause macular degeneration.

Specialty Contact Lens options may include daily disposable “gel” lenses for optimum comfort. These lenses are the best option for dry eye sufferers. Our Optometric Physicians also fit multi-focal and astigmatism correcting lenses as well as gas permeable and scleral lenses.

Eye Function Testing
In addition to vision testing, your examination will include testing eye functionality. Our optometric physicians perform several tests to evaluate depth perception, color vision, eye muscle capabilities, peripheral vision, and responsiveness to light. Several other simple tests are completed to determine whether the eyes are focusing, moving, and working together properly. The test results enable your doctor to diagnose underlying conditions that may be impairing the eyes ability to focus or work together, therefore causing your eyes to work inefficiently.

Many people experience eyestrain or other visual symptoms that do not require eyeglasses or contact lenses. Our doctors successfully prescribe customized vision therapy (training) exercises that alleviate eyestrain from many types of muscle imbalance.

Eye Health
As part of your comprehensive eye exam, your Optometric Physician examines the overall health of the eye through a medical eye examination. Your doctor evaluates eye health by visually inspecting the eye and eyelids using a sophisticated bio-microscope. To examine the internal structures of the eye, we perform a state-of-the-art high resolution retinal scan or dilate your pupils (or both).

Every eye health examination screens for glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, dry or watery eyes, and dozens of other eye conditions and diseases. Our glaucoma test includes new technology that allows us to check your eye pressure without “puffing” air into your eyes.

Central Oregon Eyecare continuously invests in new diagnostic technology. We have the world’s most advanced instruments for detecting and treating diseases such as glaucoma and retinal conditions.

Access to Experienced, Oregon LASIK Surgeons

LASIK is a procedure that reshapes the outer surface (cornea) of your eyes to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The procedure’s high success rates and levels of patient satisfaction have made LASIK one of the most commonly performed elective surgeries — in fact, nearly 1 million Americans have LASIK each year.

While we don’t offer LASIK in any of our Central Oregon Eyecare locations, we’ve teamed up with a network of experienced, local LASIK surgeons. By joining forces with other laser vision correction specialists in central Oregon, we’re able to provide our patients with access to the high-quality LASIK surgeons, cutting-edge technology, and life-changing results they deserve.

“Can I Have LASIK?”

The best way to determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK is to come in for a complimentary LASIK consultation at any one of Central Oregon Eyecare’s five convenient locations.
There are a few preliminary questions you can answer to determine if LASIK is the right procedure for you:

  • Are you 18 years or older?
  • Do you currently wear glasses or contacts?
  • Are you nearsighted, farsighted, and/or have astigmatism?
  • Has your prescription been stable for at least one year?
  • Are you in good general health?
  • Are you currently NOT pregnant or nursing?

If you answered YES to all of these questions, there’s a good chance LASIK will work for you.

If you answered NO to any question, don’t stop there — it doesn’t mean vision correction surgery won’t work for you. Speak to one of our experienced Oregon eye doctors to learn more.

Ortho-K for Myopia Control

Ortho-K is one of the specialty services we provide at Central Oregon Eyecare. It’s used as a treatment for myopia (nearsightedness) in adults and children.

Nearsightedness occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This causes objects close-up to be clear and objects farther away to be blurry.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) therapy involves wearing specialty contact lenses at night to gently reshape the cornea while you sleep, so that light will focus directly on the retina, resulting in improved vision throughout the day. It’s the same idea as LASIK, only without the surgery — patients often think of it as “braces for the eyes.”

For adults, wearing Ortho-K lenses overnight can temporarily reduce your dependence on glasses during the day. The most effective use for Ortho-K, however, is for myopia control in children. If your child’s vision is steadily worsening, using Ortho-K lenses overnight can help control its progression, resulting in a lower prescription for your child when their eyes’ development stabilizes over time.

A higher degree of myopia will not only cost more to correct in the future if your child undergoes laser eye surgery as an adult, but severe myopia is also associated with glaucoma, retinal issues, and other eye conditions. Ortho-K can help reduce these outcomes.

Contacts

Contact lenses are a great option to correct vision for many people and due to recent advances in contact lens technology, even people who have not been successful with contact lens wear in the past, are often good candidates for contact lenses now.  All of our doctors at Central Oregon Eyecare stay abreast of the very latest trends and technology in contact lenses.

Risky Business!

Not sure if you should try contacts again?  Let us take the risk out of the equation for you.  At Central Oregon Eyecare, we offer an exclusive contact lens fit guarantee!  If we try lenses on you and you do not like them and do not wish to proceed, there is no charge for the additional time, evaluation or fit!  If your initial impression is positive and we train you and send you home to try them, but then decide they are not right for you, don’t worry.  We’ve got your back!  In this situation we apply any money you have spent on your contact lens fit to a new pair of eyeglasses.

What is Involved?

Prior to a contact lens examination it is important to have a complete primary vision and eye health examination.

Whether it is glasses, contact lenses, lasik surgery or cataract surgery, a thorough eye examination is an important first step.  Your doctor will evaluate your suitability for all of these options plus others during this examination.

Contact Lens Examination

During the subsequent Contact Lens examination and evaluation there are a multitude of factors to consider.  Such factors as age, occupation, hobbies, eye health, physical health, dexterity, sports are important considerations among others.  The type of correction one needs also is an important part of the decision.  The need for bifocals, astigmatism or binocular eye coordination issues must be considered.

One size does NOT fit all!

Our doctors at Central Oregon Eyecare know that “one size does NOT fit all” when fitting contact lenses.  That is why we maintain a huge inventory of different contact lens brands, models, sizes, curvatures and modalities.  This means we usually have multiple lens options for people in stock.

Next, special tests that are specific to contact lens wear are necessary.  Measuring the shape and contour of your corneas are critical to your contact lens success and comfort.  In addition, due to our dry high desert environment, we evaluate tear production and tear quality.  But don’t despair if you suffer from dry eyes.  We have many new dry eye therapies and special “dry eye” contacts lenses available to us now.

Contact Lens Training

While it is not difficult, putting a contact lens into your eye for the first time can be a challenge for some people.  Our skilled contact lens technicians provide training to help you become comfortable with this process.

Trial Period

Finally, we provide a trial period to see if the contact lenses will adequately correct your vision in your environment and will maintain their comfort throughout the day.  Some of our patients desire contact lenses for part-time wear or for specific activities such as exercising, skiing, watersports, etc.

In the final analysis, our greatest concern is for the health of your eyes.  A safe wearing schedule and lens hygiene program will be recommended and discussed with your doctor during your visits.

Special Use and Colored Contact Lenses

Some people have more challenging prescriptions or eye conditions that require a more specialized contact lens.  We provide a full array of contact lenses for specialized needs, including:

  • Bifocal Contact Lenses
  • Monovision Contact Lenses
  • Astigmatism Contact Lenses
  • Colored/Cosmetic Contact Lenses
  • Sports Contact Lenses
  • Keratoconus Treatment
  • Scleral Contact Lenses

Colored Contact Lenses can change your eye color. The cosmetic options range from a subtle eye color change to striking and dramatic color change effects.

Sometimes an eye injury may leave an eye disfigured or discolored.  Tinted contact lenses can be used to improve the cosmetic appearance and even reduce light sensitivity in these situations.

We provide

  • Contact lens refills and prescription
  • Proper care instructions
  • Fit and comfort check-ups
