Ortho-K Therapy

At Central Oregon Eye Care, we offer a full scope of eye care: everything from comprehensive eye exams, a wide selection of frames, and contact lens options for hard-to-fit patients, to medical eye care to treat diseases like macular degeneration, glaucoma, and dry eye.

Our patients trust us to provide them with advanced solutions to meet their needs, which is why we offer specialized services like Ortho-K therapy for myopia (nearsightedness) control.

Our Ortho-K Specialist

Keiji Shiyomura, OD is a specialist in Ortho-K, committed to advancing myopia control with the latest treatments in the field. While in optometry school, she developed an interest in innovative eye care techniques using the latest technology in the industry, and she’s passionate about providing patients in central Oregon with access to this life-changing therapy.

What is Ortho K?

Nearsightedness is a refractive vision condition that occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea — the clear, outer surface of the eye — is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Nearsighted people see things clearly up-close but struggle to focus on objects that are farther away.

Orthokeratology, known as Ortho-K, involves the use of specially designed, gas-permeable contact lenses to gently reshape the cornea so that the light focuses directly onto the retina, resulting in clearer distance vision. It’s the same idea as LASIK vision correction surgery, which uses a laser to reshape the cornea — except Ortho-K doesn’t involve surgery.

Ortho-K contact lenses are worn overnight, working while you sleep to grant you stable vision correction during the day. You can think of Ortho-K as “braces for your eyes”.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Ortho-K?

Ortho-K lenses are custom-made to fit the unique shape and topography of a patient’s eyes, which makes them convenient and comfortable. Depending on your prescription, the effects of Ortho-K will either be immediate or will take a few weeks for maximum correction — but after that, wearing these lenses nightly will provide freedom from glasses and contact lenses during the daytime, without surgery.

Ortho-K can be used to slow the progression of myopia in children, and the ideal candidates are nearsighted children whose vision is getting worse. In adults, Ortho-K can temporarily correct nearsightedness; it works best for individuals under the age of 45 who have a low degree of myopia, and who wish to reduce dependence on glasses.

Eye Function Testing

Your eyes’ ability to focus is only one aspect of your vision. Our optometrists will also evaluate your depth perception, color vision, eye muscles, peripheral vision, and light sensitivity, to make sure every aspect of your eye care is addressed.

Eyewear isn’t always the answer to vision issues. In some cases, we’ll prescribe eye exercises and custom vision therapy to alleviate eye strain and help improve eye functionality.

Ortho-K and Myopia Control

Ortho-K therapy is beneficial for children who want to slow or stop the progression of myopia as their eyes develop as part of a myopia control strategy. If myopia is allowed to progress without intervention, it increases a person’s risk for retinal issues and glaucoma. A higher degree of myopia will also cost more to correct with laser eye surgery in the future.

Non-Surgical Vision Correction

The other group of candidates for Ortho-K are adults who can’t have LASIK due to conditions like dry eye syndrome, or who are simply looking for a convenient, non-surgical way to reduce their dependence on glasses throughout the day.

Ortho-K Therapy at Central Oregon

Whether you’re looking to free yourself from glasses or contacts, or are concerned with your nearsighted child’s worsening prescription, Ortho-K can be a great solution for you and your family. When you come in for an Ortho-K consultation at Central Oregon Eyecare, Dr. Shiyomura will discuss your individual lifestyle needs and vision goals and determine if Ortho-K is right for your eyes.
